Meet Miss Flores...
Hello!
This 2018-2019 school year will be my fifth year teaching and my fourth year teaching at Lanier Middle School. As a graduate of Lanier MS (Class of 2003), I love this campus and it has been an amazing experience being back as a teacher.
Childhood and Education
I was born in Chula Vista, California, then, at a very young age (3 or 4), moved to Houston where I spent the majority of my life. I am a proud product of Houston ISD (Oak Forest Elementary, Lanier Middle School, and the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts). I spent my first year of college at the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma where I majored in Vocal Music Performance. While I was there, I rediscovered my interest in history and education, changed majors, and ended up moving back home to pursue my Bachelors in Secondary Social Studies Education from the University of Houston.
Teaching Philosophy and Goals
I love teaching history and I hope to create (or enrich) a love of the content in your student. A huge part of my teaching philosophy involves the importance I place on building strong, meaningful, and authentic relationships with my students as a means of creating a safe and engaging learning environment. I believe in the idea that the students are not the only ones learning -- I am right there learning along with them. In my class, I encourage my students to support each other as we open our minds to the complex content, layers, and perspectives of our nation's history. This class will be so much more than a bunch of dead people, dates, and events; I ask my scholars to connect, question, empathize, and sometimes step outside their comfort zones. Although it can be a bit uncomfortable to step outside of our "comfort bubbles", I believe it is in those moments where human beings are able to create new, meaningful, and life-changing experiences.
In addition to my classroom, I am also the co-coach for Lanier Cheer and the co-sponsor for Lanier Student Council. You can also see me at many school events such as sports games, concerts, plays, and anything the kids are involved in because it is important to me that I get to see the students shine outside of their academics.
In my free time, I enjoy going to concerts, music festivals, (I am really into music -- I had a radio show in college and I still DJ events on the side), Rockets games, museums, comedy shows, and thrift shops. I love photography, traveling, running/exercising, making funny videos with my cat, Gatsby, and of course relaxing with a good ole Netflix marathon.
If there is ever an issue, question, or concern that you or your student has regarding my class, or Lanier as a whole, please do not hesitate to contact me.
